“The Dragon” by Marjaneh Amirshahi

I am not afraid of the fire
I am not afraid of the wind
I am not afraid of the storm
I am not afraid of the tornado
I am afraid of the calm

When calm arrives
I have usually expired
When calm arrives
I have usually become numb
When calm arrives
I have usually left a long time ago

I decided to leave
Not to see the dragon anymore
I met the dragon long time ago when I was very young
But I closed my eyes
I did not see the flames, but felt them
Then I told myself
The flames were the summer heat
I told myself
The flames were young love
I told myself
The flames were the passion
I told myself the flames
Were the lust
But I saw the flames

I pretended I was cold
Needed the flames to keep me warm
I pretended I was blind
Needed the flames as my light
I pretended I was sleep
Needed the smoke from the flames to wake me up

I just closed, pretended there were no flames
I don’t like the dragon
I can’t pretend there is no flame anymore
I am not cold
I am not blind
And I am not sleep
I am calm
And I have left a long time ago.
