“WHO GIVES A SHIT!” by Vicki Batkin

Elizabeth Edwards looses her battle
“The Big C”
Cut to
Angelina and Brad
At the premiere of her new movie
She’s wearing a sweater dress
Cut to her thigh
Cut to Mark Wahlberg
Christian Bale
At the premiere
The Fighter
Cut to
Looking for elder care facilities
For my elderly parents
They boast
“Celebrity parents reside here”
“Who gives a shit?”
Says, my husband
Does anyone really care about Elizabeth Edwards?
Does anyone really care about the elderly, if they don’t have a famous child?
Does anyone care that I’ve had a headache for two days?
Does anyone care that I was three pounds thinner
Last week
I am
This week?
Does anyone care
That Obama
Will wave the Estate Tax
To gain
Political ground???
Three kids lost their mother today

  4. Karen Ross · December 9, 2010

You said what many of us think when we watch endless shots of celebrities doing their celebrity thing, But I do know what it is like to look for a decent place for a parent to live and it is not as easy as a celebrity flashing a famous smile. It’s a bitch!
    Love to you,

    • Vicki Batkin · December 9, 2010

K, thank you! love to you too!

Vicki, excellent piece. No shit. You dilineated the parallel universes we simultaneously inhabit. We eat our popcorn while watching bloodbaths all over the world. And the thing is, we survive to tell the tales of how we wept at hearing of Elizabeth Edwards’ death while we turned the pages of a magazine and goggled at Angelina Jolie’s thigh high dress.

    • Vicki Batkin · December 9, 2010

Rozie…yes, you got it. thank you. ox

  6. Angela · December 9, 2010

The sell and survival. That glory machine is a hack. Feel you and wish the best possible outcome.

    THANKS for the reality check.

You’ve whopped us upside the head on this one. A reality slap that resonates deep into our bones. Miss you and class

    Told with raging passion……………But

We are breed to feed on the glossy mags and stand in awe of the glitz world…. You may knock it today but tomorrow you buy it!!

We live in a world so unequal and in despair…….But it drives the pen and is a meal for the reader… Who cares is a searching question we sometimes lie with our answer.
