    I think that’s from Maugham’s long essay “The Summing Up”? Which is a great read. I used to read it about once a year when I was a journalist and essayist as a refresher course on how to write with clarity and style and for as his incisive take on the arts. You hit on one of my faves here, Lisa dahling. Your the best.
