“What Birds Know” by L. K. Thayer
I think they have it over us
I think they know more
than they’re letting on
those birds
they have it all figured out
I just know it
I see how they look at us
how they look
down
and gossip and feel
sorry for us
they couldn’t care
less
if we just washed
our car
they know we envy
them
and their fancy frocks
and feathers
ruffling their plumage
and strutting their stuff
they see how we
fly off the handle
they know our lives
are tough
they don’t envy us
